What direction is Debby Devos trying to take our children?

If you are concerned about the closing of 25 Detroit Public Schools, let the three ladies in this video tell you why you should be. They are not prophets. No! But they are seers. How do I know?  I know because they have done what every man and woman of indigenous ascension should be compelled to do-that is, to REMEMBER. Remember our past relationship with an on-going faltering education system. A system that strategically displace and shuffle indigenous children around at will-like pawns on a chess board in favor of the queen; or even worse, like street whores forced to perform on a corner that best fit the needs of their greedy heartless pimp.

But I remember, back in the 50’s and 60’s when the public school curriculum was plentiful for the Negro. Back when we could choose a major and study in it for college. We were offered orchestra, concert choir and glee club. We had home economics with a fully staffed kitchen and sewing room with Singer sewing machines. We had an Olympic size pool, a competitive swim team and swim meets. Yes Negros could swim. We had ballet and jazz class. We were offered every sport you could think of including field hockey. (Go figure). But most importantly, we had hot lunches made from scratch. My favorite lunch was meatloaf with mashed potatoes and creamed corn. The buns were made fresh right on campus. I tell you something else we had. WE had good grades. THERE WAS NO NEGRO CHILD LEFT BEHIND BECAUSE YOUR BEHIND WAS IN JEOPARDY. So when I read or hear the phrase “ Low performance school” I have to ask. What the hell is that?

It seems to me that Detroit Public Schools are closing due to the poor performance of Engler, Granholm and Snyder, not the students.

But speaking of greedy heartless pimps… Who in the hell is this Betsy Devos? Seems that privatization is gearing our children towards her agenda..

We got our work cut out for us family. So we have to answer the call to action of these three ladies put forth. It’s time to put our heads together to make the appropriate change. It’s time for us to take control of our children’s education. It’s time for a plan of action!

  1. I, too, REMEMBER those days and I also REMEMBER Wood Shop, Junior Achievement, Auto Mechanics, AND other apprenticeship & vocational programs that WERE A PART OF THE CURRICULUM and NOT A specialty course outsourced to “private schools” to make a buck. I REMEMBER when phonics were A MANDATORY PART OF THE LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM as we were learning how to read and write…..now, it is a “made for television” infomercial specialty program from which FOLKS are profiting.

We MUST come to the table with a MYRIAD OF PLAUSIBLE SOLUTIONS because this epidemic has many layers and ONE solution will not suffice.

A possible solution would be for parents and teachers come together and CREATE THE CURRICULUM TOGETHER!!
STOP LETTING THE HIGHER UPS WHO ARE NOT IN THE CLASSROOMS DICTATE WHAT SHOULD BE TAUGHT!!!! OFTEN TIMES THOSE UNNECESSARU CLASSES ONLY MEAN COINS IN THE POCKETS OF THE HIGHER UPS!!!

Another possible solution is SURVEY THE STUDENTS AND FIND OUT THEIR INTERESTS!!!! We can not continue to throw things at the students without letting their voices be heard!! I do believe when we design separate curriculums that targets SPECIFIC goals and interests of the students, the classrooms will be much easier to manage!

Another solution: HIRE MORE BLACK MALE TEACHERS/INSTRUCTORS/PROFESSORS…..AND NOT JUST TO COACH A DAMN SPORTS TEAM!! …….that speaks for itself…..we ALL KNOW what an impact that dynamic will be not just for the morale of The schools, BUT IT WILL REINFORCE A MASCULINE AUTHORITY AND RESPECT FOR YOUNG MEN TO EMULATE and ASPIRE to pattern themselves after! Young ladies will learn how a MAN is to treat a lady through daily interaction……young men will learn how to RESPECT their female counterparts in a regular basis!!

Another solution: Re-Elect the SCHOOL BOARD!!!! REMOVE ALL THOSE CAREER POLITICIANS AND PUT FOLKS ON THAT BOARD WHO WILL FIGHT FOR THE STUDENTS AND BE AN ALLY TO THE PARENTS!!

ANOTHER SOLUTION: REDESIGN THE P.T.A.!!!! Get these parents INVOLVED in the decision making process. Keep them informed of all the changed coming down the pipeline, empower them to challenge the Board whenever it APPEARS that a child’s education is being out to test!!

Another solution: BRING BACK NIGHT SCHOOL!!!!!!! This will encourage students who have difficulties to either study at a more convenient time (if day time hours are needed to work) and/or provide options for students and parents alike who may need to take extra courses or remedial courses while maintaining their dignity!! Plus, child care services are offered for young parents while they are taking their classes.

I could go on, but you get the gist!!!

As Iyanla Vanzant would say, “YOU’VE GOT TO DO YOUR WORK!”
